Deoli is a historic town in the Tonk district of Rajasthan, widely nicknamed "Chhaavni" due to its origin as a British military cantonment. Early Military Roots and British Cantonment 1844: The Kota Contingent was raised, laying the groundwork for military presence in the area. 1852: The Deoli cantonment was officially established by the British administration. 1857: The Meena Battalion was raised during the Indian Mutiny, which later served as the core of the 42nd Deoli Regiment of the British Indian Army. The regiment also later served during World War I. 18591934: The town served under the Tonk-Haraoti agency. World War II and the Internment Camp Era 1942: A prisoner-of-war (POW) camp was built by the colonial British administration in Deoli to hold German, Italian, and Japanese detainees during World War II. 1962-1966: Following the Sino-Indian War, the disused WWII camp was repurposed by the Indian government to forcibly intern over 3,000 Chinese-Indians ("Deoliwallahs") under harsh desert conditions. This dark chapter remained largely forgotten for decades. Modern Evolution 1977-1984: The former camp and facilities transitioned through use by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) before being handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in 1980. August 1, 1984: The CISF Regional Training Centre (RTC) Deoli was officially established, which is today one of the largest training facilities for security personnel in Asia.
